Stumbled on this... don't remember what I was thinking about adding back a year ago.
However, I read this from Jevski: "The problem with tempban is often that they just go play somewhere else for a day or 2, and then come back and play on HOG, not really caring why they where tb'ed in the first place. Those kind of players often go under the radar for quite a while since they get caught doing shit by different admins, and can continue for quite some time if they just keep switching names."
Agreed. They'll just go play elsewhere for a few weeks and then come back as if nothing's happened. But then, there might be instances where the infraction, or the attitude was not such that you feel the need to talk to them, or some players that you figure the 3-day temp ban by itself is sufficient as a "wake-up call", so you might have a temp ban that is time dependent this way, one which requires no further action. Then you might have a second type of temp ban where the ban is "permanent" until such time as the player comes to the forums to appeal and get the ban removed, no?
When you temp-ban a player, you can set a bunch of pre-prepared message/explanation that the player will see on his screen after he has been banned, correct?
If so, then could not the ban message read something along the lines of "You have been temp-banned from this server, not permanently banned as yet. However, this temp ban will stay in effect until such time as you have logged onto the hogclangaming.com forums, appealed your temp ban, and until such time as your temp ban has been successfully appealed and revoked." ?
This way, when they are temp banned, they will see the message, they will know that they are only temp banned instead of perm banned, and they will know that the only way to lift their temp ban penalty is for them to log onto the HOG forums and successfully appeal their ban. No more confusion.
And then, for those that are only banned for a few days, a similar message would describe that they are only banned for X days, and that they can resume play on the HOG servers once this time period has elapsed.
So you might have:
!tb p = temp ban permanent
!tb f = temp ban requires forum visit to lift
!tb 1d (2d, or 3d, 1w, etc) = temp ban 24 hrs (48 hrs, 72 hrs, 1 week, etc)

Not possible, game limitation as far as I know. Only shows a message along the lines of "Kicked, excessive TKs"
